Awesome Oamaru
(29th - 30th Nov)
To plot our way down the coast from Christchurch we closed our eyes and pointed at a spot on the map... ok, maybe not. But we may as well have! We just looked for a big-ish looking city on the way down. We decided on Oamaru, a seaside town on the east coast. We checked into a campsite here which was very close to some little penguin and yellow-eyed penguin colonies. They were doing tours which you could pay for to see both sorts, or you could self-drive to try and view some yellow-eyed ones for free. Naturally we went for the free option. After our tea we headed to the nearby coast and were lucky enough to see about 2-3 penguins coming in from the sea. We've been told they're very rare so I felt quite privilledged as I remember seeing some of these on my trip 5 years ago too. It wasn't until we moved on from here and went further down the coast that we began to see so many viewing points to go see yellow-eyed penguins. They may be rare in most of the world, but apparently not on NZ's South Island.
We just spent the one night here and then headed off again down the coast to the outskirts of Invercargill. It was here that we would be getting our final vaccinations for our S.E. Asia leg and it was also here that we would be going to see Rhys Darby (Kiwi comedian, aka "Murray" from Flight of the Conchords) perform live.

was he any good?
He was very funny, I've got his first stand up DVD back home - you're welcome to borrow it when I return (and have unpacked enough to find it!). He's much better live though.
